About American Graduate


WLRN Public Radio & Television has been selected by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to be the American Graduate public media hub station for Miami-Dade County.

The American Graduate is a recently launched national initiative to help local communities find solutions to address the dropout crisis in the United States.

WLRN, one of 20 national media hubs, will implement awareness strategies and engagement activities in collaboration with M-DCPS staff and students, specifically targeting the district’s middle school population.

For more than four decades, public media has been committed to improving educational outcomes for our nation’s most disadvantaged children. WLRN is public media for South Florida and we’re giving a voice to those committed to finding solutions to the dropout crisis in America.  Download More Information

WLRN launched the American Graduate: Let’s make it happen! initiative at a community forum held January 10th, 2012 in Miami, Florida. Moderated by Marcus A. Christian, WLRN Community Advisory Member, the forum showcased the American Graduate video and a keynote message about graduation rates from Miami-Dade County Superintendent of Schools, Alberto M. Carvalho. More than 100 community and education stakeholders participated in the forum, which served as a platform to generate conversations and networks about education resources and organizations addressing dropout rates. Public media’s trusted producers are creating programs and specials that will raise awareness and increase dialogue about the dropout crisis.

In addition, some public radio and television programs will support teachers by developing educational resources to better engaged their students in learning.

    Marcus A. Christian - Event Facilitator

    Marcus ChristianMarcus A. Christian is the Executive Assistant United States Attorney at the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Florida, one of America’s largest and busiest offices of federal prosecutors.

    At the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Marcus also has served as a deputy chief in the Major Crimes Section and as an Assistant United States Attorney.

Participating Middle Schools

  • Mandarin Lakes K-8 Academy

    At Mandarin Lakes K–8 Academy, a Caring School Community, we aim to educate and prepare students for a global society.

    Through our Business and Communications and Dual Language Academies, we incorporate a rigorous academic program aimed to spark the intellectual curiosity of every student and create divergent thinkers.

    Additionally, we strive to highlight and foster the diversity of our community at large through cross cultural identity, awareness and respect, which will develop responsible, well rounded and civic-minded citizens.

  • Nautilus Middle School

    Nautilus Middle School is located in a residential community on approximately 10 acres of land on Miami Beach.

    The original school was built in 1949.

    During its existence, the grade configuration of the school was changed from a traditional junior high school model consisting of students in grades seven through nine to a middle school model consisting of students in grades seven and eight.

  • North Dade Middle School

    North Dade Middle School’s International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program core values revolve around the concept that all of our students will develop a more enhanced perspective on the pursuit of academic excellence, intercultural awareness, world citizenship and the ability to make a more positive global impact through the consistent modeling of the IBMYP’s 5 Areas of Interaction.

  • Hialeah Gardens Middle School

    Located in Hialeah Gardens, Hialeah Gardens Middle School is committed to aiding the intellectual and social development of its students by ensuring that they become conscientious citizens of society.

    Students will be educated in a secure, encouraging atmosphere with a variety of educational tools, empowering each student to develop the attitude, behavior, ability and knowledge needed to responsible adults.

    Through our academies, our staff fosters an environment where diversity is valued, quality of life is enhanced, individual aspirations are fulfilled and knowledge is strengthened.
