Three Miami Thinkers Take On Beavers At The End Of The World

In 1946, a bizarre cargo shipment stopped over at the Pan American Airlines headquarters in Miami. En route to Tierra del Fuego, the southern most tip of South America, fifty North American Beavers were temporarily housed in a walk-in refrigerator maintained by the airline. The door of the fridge, however, was made of wood.

This is oversight at its worst; Beavers in a prison made of wood.

Why Is Maltz Jupiter Theatre Flourishing While Other South Florida Theaters Shutter Their Doors?

Maltz Jupiter Theatre is riding high on 23 Carbonell nominations.

Andrew Kato, producing artistic director for Maltz Jupiter Theatre, would never criticize another South Florida theater company, especially for following its artistic vision. The fact remains, however, that the theater he oversees -- which just nabbed 23 nominations in the Carbonell Awards -- is flourishing while other South Florida theaters have shuttered their doors.

Do You Know Who Your State Legislators Are?

Redistricting last year may have had a role in making it more difficult for PIN members to name their state legislators. Above, a map showing pre-redistricting Senate district boundaries (in red) and current Senate district boundaries (in black).

The state Legislature, perhaps more than Congress, passes laws that have a direct impact on the day-to-day life of a Floridian: how much you pay in sales tax, how much time you have to vote, how you obtain a gun.

Tallahassee is in our lives every day. It's only 480 miles away. And yet, for many in South Florida, it might as well be on another continent.

Our Rivers And Springs Are Getting Sicker, Former Fla. Governor Says It's Because Of 'Bad Policies'

The Loxahatchee River in Palm Beach County is a popular spot for outdoor recreation.

A scathing guest column that appeared Wednesday in the Orlando Sentinel says "severe budget cuts are seriously compromising the ability of Florida's Department of Environmental Protection and Legislature and water management districts to adequately protect our state's natural resources."

Florida Wants You To Know: You Are Legally Responsible For Reporting Child Abuse

Credit http://dontmissthesigns.org/
Florida has launched a campaign to help people identify signs of child abuse.

The toughest child abuse reporting law in the nation went into effect in Florida last October.

It used to be that only parents or caregivers suspected of abuse had to be reported.

Now, anyone who suspects a child is being abused or neglected is required to report it regardless of the suspect.  Failure to do so could lead to a felony charge resulting in a five year prison sentence and a $5,000 fine.

Are Cats A Threat To Nature Or Simply Man's Favorite Scapegoat?

Is this the face of a killer? He would be, if given half the chance.

A teddy bear of a cat stretches across a desk. His baseball-sized orange paws skim the keyboard as his purring body contorts into a position that exposes an expansive patch of striped belly. The tableau, which plays out in my home office on a near-daily basis, is a pleasant distraction from this week's reminder that my loyal companion is a natural born killer.

Florida's Current Aquifer Models Paint Inaccurate Picture Of State's Water Supply

Florida's current computer models for tracking underground water flow are coming up short.

Understanding how water flows through Florida's aquifers is integral to maintaining  a safe and sufficient supply of fresh water, but current computer models used to monitor the state's aquifers and springs are "full of holes," according to some critics.

Visualized: Guns and Murder in Florida

Credit Grant Smith / FCIR
Florida homicide data from 2000 to 2011 shows that, over the last decade, the likelihood that a murder in Florida will involve a firearm has steadily increased.

The horrific killing of 20 schoolchildren in Newtown, Conn., revived the debate over gun control in the United States. President Barack Obama outlined his controversial proposal for gun control last Wednesday, including requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales, strengthening the ban on assault weapons, and limiting high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Texting While Driving And Other Sins Of Florida's Drivers

Credit taestell
39 states - including libertarian-leaning New Hampshire - ban texting while driving. Florida isn't one of them.

Florida is one of only 11 states that does not prohibit texting while driving.  Though state legislators have already introduced 3 texting ban bills for the upcoming session, similar bills have failed in the past several years.

Legislators Want To Deny Licenses To U. S. Graduates Of Free Cuban Medical School

Credit Toronto Star
HEADED FOR THE BLACK LIST: The Latin American School of Medicine is the world's largest medical school. Republicans in the Florida Legislature want to make sure that American graduates of the Cuban school cannot get Florida medical licenses.

American medical students who get their diplomas in Cuba could forget about practicing in Florida if legislative bills filed by two Hialeah Republicans are passed this session.

State Rep. Manny Diaz Jr. said Americans who overlook human and civil rights abuses just to get a cheap medical degree lack the "moral clarity to serve patients in Florida."

The Senate bill, SB 456, was filed by State Sen. Rene Garcia.

Every couple of months, I finally plug my phone into the computer. iTunes annoyingly asks if I want to upgrade something or other, and then I download what looks like a year’s full of photos. There are plenty of my dog, friends, the wife, and whatnot. And then reams of food.

Lots of food. Some are things I’ve cooked myself. Others are dishes I’ve forgotten about from just weeks ago, taken after that third glass wine or just on a random Tuesday night that long ago blurred into yesterday.

From The Curious Vault At The Miami Science Museum: Turtles

A living fossil, sea turtles still nest up and down the busy and overbuilt South Florida coast and travel past our shores throughout the year. The various species of ocean roaming turtle are approximately 200-300 million years old but because they lay their eggs on our beaches, scientists are able to closely study the nomadic animals. For this reason, and with modern techniques such as satellite tagging, we can occasionally glimpse closely into their mysterious lives.

Today's Florida panther is struggling for survival, but things could've been much worse, according to a recent report from the University of Florida. Research shows Florida's big cats were given a boost in 1995, when eight female cougars from Texas were brought in to help diversify the ailing Florida population, the News-Press reports.

State Asks For Half A Million To Reclaim $20 Million From Bankrupt Company

Credit openDemocracy /Flickr
Scene: Digital Domain filed for bankruptcy in 2012 after investors and state and local governments sunk a total of $135 million in cash, land and tax credits into the digital animation studio.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity is asking state lawmakers for half a million dollars in order to recoup a $20-million investment in the now-defunct digital animation studio, Digital Domain.

And according to local experts, Florida has a tough fight ahead to get its money back.

The state originally gave Digital Domain $20 million in incentives in order to lure the company--and jobs--to Port St. Lucie. Four months ago, the firm filed for bankruptcy, shut down and let go 300 Florida workers.

Democrats Seek $10,000 Raise For Teachers

Credit lakelandlocal on flickr
HOW MUCH OF A RAISE? Gov. Scott wants an immediate $2,500 for every Florida teacher. Democrats want state teacher pay linked to national averages for even bigger raises.

Florida voters may be asked to raise the salary of a rookie teacher by $10,000 starting two years from now. If they approve, the pay increase would be part of a constitutional amendment that ties Florida teacher pay scales at all career levels to national averages.

The average Florida teacher salary now is $46,000, about $10,000 less than the national average.

Why Florida Lawmakers Are Now Considering Medicaid Expansion

Credit Sammy Mack / WLRN
State Sen. René García is less opposed to Medicaid expansion than he used to be.

When Florida sued to overturn the Affordable Care Act, lawmakers targeted a piece of the law that would have forced Florida to make Medicaid available to more than a million uninsured Floridians.

The U. S. Supreme Court upheld most of the act but it made Medicaid expansion optional.

Now some Florida lawmakers who originally opposed Medicaid expansion are seriously considering that option.

Perhaps you’ve seen the phrase “Live to Ride—Ride to Live” on a T-shirt or bumper sticker somewhere. It has been on my belt buckle for about 30 years. Motorcycling has been a passion of mine pretty much from the day I got my driver’s license. The activity of being in the wind, leaning into corners, the sight of a bike, and the very simplistic nature of the machine, all bring joy.

Robert Lickliter, is the director of graduate studies in the Psychology Department at FIU’s College of Arts & Sciences. He leads a research team that studies quail embryos for clues about pre-term baby development.

One day more than seven years ago, Debbie Brunson  woke up to an unfamiliar sound. She and her husband were camping on their land in the Redlands farming area. The sound she heard was that of an adult male Bob White quail.

It shocked her because she hadn't heard that bird call for over a decade.

"In Florida, there use to be quail everywhere.  But because of farming and pesticides and buildings,  they’ve disappeared," Brunson said.
