Miami Beach is going literary, literally.

Thursday, local book enthusiasts can sit around, handcrafted cocktail in hand, and talk literature. Better yet, they can leave with a free book.

The event is put on by Bookleggers, a community mobile library often referred to as “a library on the run.”

According to the Miami New Times, “Co-founders Nathaniel Sandler and David Gonzalez conceived the inaugural event as something of a one-night mobile library and book swap fueled by beer and wine.”

This time, it will be fueled by what they’re calling the Hemingway drink special, for $10 a pop.

Sandler talked to Beached Miami about his motivation for the initiative.

“Booklegging itself is effectively about protecting the printed word and disseminating the printed word,” he said. “Though we are not working against any forces of oppression, we are doing just that.”

Literature lovers: Grab your worn copies of "The Old Man and the Sea" and dog-ear your calendars. The event will be from 7 to 11 p.m. Thursday at The Broken Shaker, a cocktail bar tucked in the art deco Freehand Miami. To leave with more than one new book, come with others to trade. Books will also be available for purchase.
