Election System Security, Mental Health App KlickEngage, And Making Websites ADA Compliant

Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired

Sen. Bill Nelson recently claimed that Russian hackers had gained access to valuable data on state voters. That raised concerns about the security of elections in South Florida. On Aug. 28, voters in Miami-Dade County head to the ballot box for the state primaries. Christina White, the Supervisor of Elections for Miami-Dade, joined Sundial to talk about what voters should know before heading to the ballot box next week.

And what steps can be taken to better fortify our voter systems? Tarek Sayed teaches cyber security at the University of Miami Business School and School of Law. He says using blockchain technology could be a more secure alternative for election systems.

Former Liberty City High School Teacher Samantha Pratt recently won a $15,000 grant to launch her application, KlickEngage. The app allows students to notify their teachers about personal or school stressors before the school day starts. The pilot program for the app launches this week and some teachers at Miami-Dade Public Schools will be implementing it in their classrooms. On Sundial, Pratt talked about the app, her plans at Harvard, where she will be getting her master’s degree, and building out a team for KlickEngage this year.

Note: You can listen to a previous interview with Pratt here.

A number of lawsuits in South Florida target websites that are not compliant with the ADA, or the Americans with Disabilities Act. The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired has an entire program dedicated to helping small businesses and nonprofits create websites that are accessible for those that are blind and deaf. On Sundial, Virgina Jacko, President and CEO of Miami Lighthouse, William “Bill” Rivera, the Miami Lighthouse Computer Technology Services Specialist, and Robert Fine, a disability rights lawyer, talked about what the program entails and how websites can become ADA compliant.
