The Florida Roundup: Unanimous Juries, Climate Solutions And Football

It's a Valentine’s Day edition of the Florida Roundup featuring husband-and-wife media teams.

The Florida legislative session is at its midpoint. The death penalty remains on the agenda. The House and Senate are split over whether juries should agree unanimously in capital punishment cases.

Craps, roulette and new slot machines could be in store for Florida’s gambling industry under a bill that cleared a key legislative committee this week. The legislation approves the gaming compact between the state and the Seminole Tribe and opens the way for new slot machines in South Florida.

Legislative efforts to target illegal immigration appear to be dead. The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said he won’t take action on the bills, including one that would outlaw sanctuary cities in Florida. There are seven sanctuary counties in the state, including Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach according to the Center for Immigration Studies.

Two South Florida congressmen announced a bipartisan partnership this week focused on climate change, and since we’re talking about the environment, we have to talk about the rising Lake Okeechobee. Last week, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers opened gates on the west and east sides of the lake, sending dirty water pouring into sensitive estuaries in an effort to ease the pressure on the lake’s southern dike. Now, Governor Rick Scott is asking the Corp for immediate action to ease the flooding of the Everglades Conservation Areas.
