Stay-At-Home, Statewide

UPDATE: The order was lifted in Florida as of May 4 except for Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties. Palm Beach County was included in the lifting of the order as of May 11.

As of April 3, all of Florida is under a stay-at-home order, where you can leave your home only for essential services. Here is the state's information sheet on frequently asked questions about the order.

Lt. Gov. Jeannette Nunez explained the order — and why it took so long — on the April 2 edition of Sundial.

Some local governments have delineated enforcement efforts -- such as fines or arrests -- but it’s unclear how enforcement will play out as the coronavirus pandemic has prompted authorities to release some nonviolent offenders from custody.

For a roundup of all the restrictions popping up across the country, see the New York Times.

OUT-OF-STATE TRAVELERS

New York

New Yorkers traveling into Florida are instructed to self-isolate for 14 days, including those who have arrived in Florida within the past 14 days. Violators could face second-degree misdemeanor charges and up to 60 days in prison or a $500 fine.

Louisiana

Gov. DeSantis announced on Friday that anyone traveling to Florida from Louisiana needs to immediately self-isolate for a period of 14 days. The restrictions are an extension of the order that applies to New Yorkers.

The governor also said he has authorized the use of checkpoints on major highways in north Florida to enforce the order, though he didn’t specify details. Louisiana does not not share a border with Florida.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY

Mayor Carlos Gimenez issued a stay at home order, but hasn’t announced an enforcement strategy. The order says residents and visitors are "urged to remain in their homes," and bans public gatherings of 10 people or more.

The action is clear that other municipalities in Miami-Dade County can implement stronger restrictions if they want to. Some cities have mirrored similar language, strongly urging residents to remain at home, rather than outright ordering them to do so, like Miami and Miami Beach have done.

City of Miami

Officials ordered residents to stay at home this week. The only exceptions are for shopping, exercising or traveling to and from work. The city also implemented a 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew, which went into effect on Thursday.

Miami Beach

The City of Miami Beach has ordered residents “to remain in their homes,” with a few notable exceptions for local businesses. Residents can still walk, run and bike outside, so long as they maintain a space of at least 6-feet between each other. Read more info here.

The city has implemented a mandatory curfew of midnight to 5:00 a.m.

On March 28, the city revised its curfew to allow restaurants to keep operating their kitchens after midnight, for delivery only.

A new order to wear masks on Miami Beach takes effect on Tuesday, April 7. The City of Miami Beach is mandating that employees and customers of grocery stores, restaurants and pharmacies wear a covering over their mouths and noses at all times inside those buildings.

They're also strongly encouraged to do the same inside other businesses that are open. The order does not apply to outdoor activities.

Coral Gables

The city declared a state of emergency and issued a Safer at Home order strongly urging residents to stay at home except for to complete essential activities.

Effective March 27, 2020, Mayor Raúl Valdés-Fauli has issued a curfew order between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. until further notice. More info here.

Miami Gardens

A curfew is in effect between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Police are out to proactively enforce the curfew, according to the city.

Gatherings of more than five people are banned, and residents are encouraged to report anyone breaking that rule. Residents are otherwise “urged” to stay inside.

Sunny Isles Beach

Residents have been ordered -- not urged -- to remain at home. Exceptions exist for people who are engaging in “essential” activities.

Homestead

A curfew order is in effect between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m., starting on Friday, March 27.

Key Biscayne

The key was the first municipality in Miami-Dade to issue a curfew, between the hours of 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. The city has also implemented a non-resident travel ban, meaning that no non-residents can travel into the village on the key.

A police checkpoint enforcing the non-resident travel ban caused serious traffic problems, so police have scaled it back. Now, instead of an outright checkpoint there are signs indicating the policy, and instead a “police presence” is enforcing the restriction.

Bal Harbour

The city has issued a statement “strongly” urging residents to stay home.

Doral

Doral has a stay at home order currently in effect. Mayor J.C. Bermudez said in a video statement: “I want to be clear: This order will be enforced by the Doral Police Department.”

A few exceptions for certain jobs and activities apply. More info can be found here.

Aventura

Residents are “strongly recommended” to stay at home.

Sweetwater

A mandatory curfew is in effect, between the hours of 11:00 p.m. and 5 a.m. The only exceptions are for emergencies.

BROWARD COUNTY

Safer At Home policy issued Thursday afternoon that "strongly urged" people to stay inside, except for participating in essential activities. That includes going to the grocery store, a pharmacy, and your job if you work at an "essential" business. The policy, which similar to Miami-Dade County's, is an order in name only.  It also further clarifies what can count as an "essential" business that's allowed to stay open.

Individual municipalities within Broward County have supplemented the county's order.

Coconut Creek

Coconut Creek has a curfew 11 p.m. to 5 a.m., with exceptions

Cooper City

Cooper City residents are ordered to remain in their homes.

Coral Springs

Residents are ordered to stay at home, with exceptions.

Fort Lauderdale

A “Safer at Home” is in effect, violatorssubject to up to $500 fine and 60 days behind bars. More details here.

Hallandale Beach

Hallandale Beach has a curfew 11p.m. to 5.am. until further notice. Only essential travel is permitted during these hours. The city also echoes Broward County's Safer at Home policy, encouraging all residents to stay home.

Hollywood

PALM BEACH COUNTY

Town of Palm Beach

The town has a curfew in place from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., to allow businesses time to sanitize their facilities and to give employees and customers time to safely get home.

MONROE COUNTY

Monroe County
