State Zika Cases Reach 200 In 2017

Florida has had 200 cases of the Zika virus in 2017, with most stemming from people who contracted the disease elsewhere and brought it into the state, according to information posted on the website.

Mosquito-borne Zika is particularly dangerous to pregnant women because it can cause severe birth defects. Of the 200 cases, 167 are classified as “travel” cases, which generally means people contracted the disease outside Florida.

Another 32 are classified as “undetermined cases,” while one case involves someone who was infected in Florida, according to the Department of Health website.
