SunPass problems, Latino Men HIV Rates & Album Brings Awareness To Distracted Driving

Janna Pelle
Janna Pelle has a new album out called “VoiceMemo,” in memory of her close friend Patrick Wannikhof who was hit by a distracted driver last year.";s:

South Florida SunPass users might want to double-check their accounts. The tolling system has a backlog of more than 100 million unprocessed payments that dates back to early June. The problem stems from struggles to overhaul SunPass' processing system. Some SunPass users fear they could face huge bills as processing resumes. Sundial spoke with Hanna Dedham of the Tampa Bay Times about how SunPass' operator—Conduent State & Local Solutions—has a history of similar mismanagement issues.

South Florida continues to have the highest rate of new HIV diagnoses in the country, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report shows Miami having a new HIV rate nearly four times the national average. That is 54 new diagnoses of the virus for every 100,000 people, making Miami the highest new HIV rate in the country. Joining Sundial is Dr.Stephen J. Fallon, executive director of Latinos Salud, a non-profit examining the Latino HIV crisis. He talks about Latino men as the group with the highest rates of HIV infection in South Florida and how his organization educates men about the South Florida HIV epidemic.

Nearly 3,500 people were killed by distracted drivers in the United States in 2015 and there were almost 400,000 injuries. Patrick Wanninkhof was biking across country for the non-profit Bike and Build when he was hit by a woman looking at her cellphone. After his death, Key Biscayne native and musician Janna Pelle composed an album as a way of coping with the loss of her very close friend. She joined Sundial to talk about the release of her album “VOICE MEMO” in honor of Patrick. Pelle will have a release party for the album this Friday to raise money for the non-profit We Save Lives that brings awareness to the issue of distracted driving.
