The Sunshine Economy: Voter Voices 2018

Jobs, paychecks and taxes -- the usual issues for an election -- have given way to heated rhetoric, discord and divisiveness. How are the issues and the political environment impacting voters and their votes?

The Youth Vote, Part 1

In October, a WhatsApp chat of the Turning Point USA’s FIU chapter was leaked to the Miami New Times. The chat included memes featuring Pepe the Frog. The Anti-Defamation League has designated it as a hate symbol. The memes also included images of Syrian refugees raping a Swedish woman, according to the New Times report. Another message joked about wearing a revealing Halloween costume as an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent to "aggressively grapple Latinas and deport them."

FIU decided the chat was protected by the First Amendment. Driena Sixto, the district director of Turning Point USA told our partner The Miami Herald she did not know what was in the chat and has since disbanded the chats.

We asked Sixto about the exchanges.
