Trio Of Scientists Create Miami's First-Ever Sci-Fi Film Fest

T. Bernier

Beam everybody down, Scotty.  Or to downtown Miami, to be exact.

From Jan. 17 to 19,  the Hyatt Regency is set to be invaded by all kinds of interplanetary voyagers and time-travelers -- courtesy of a film festival celebrating all things sci-fi.

About 50 science fiction, fantasy and horror films from around the world will be screened at the Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival this weekend.

MiSciFi, as it’s called by its founders, is being billed as the first of its kind in Miami.

The event’s creators are a trio of South Florida scientists who make films in their spare time.  After attending screenings of their own work at sci-fi film fests around the world, they decided it was about time to start one in Miami.

"We know that there are so many other filmmakers like ourselves that love to make fantastic film," says co-founder Troy Bernier.  " So having a very strong eye of what’s science fiction and what’s not, we thought we were very people-qualified to take on such a venture.”

But MiScifi isn’t all fiction, fantasy and flights of fancy.  The three-day festival will also hold a free screening of eight microdocs – short documentaries of 30 minutes or less that focus on innovation and scientific discoveries from around the world.

The Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival runs from Friday, Jan. 17 to Sunday, Jan. 19 at Miami's Hyatt Regency Hotel,  400 SE Second Ave.
