Whole Foods recalls Pecorino Aged in Walnut Leaves Mitica

A Whole Foods store in West Palm Beach is one of two that has recalled a specific cheese as containing a potentially fatal food poisoning.

The cheese is the Pecorino Aged Cheese in Walnut Leaves and there were two locations listed on the supermarket's website where the cheese is being recalled: New York and West Palm Beach.

The danger, according to store officials,  is linked to the bacteria Listeria. TheCenters for Disease Control and Preventiondefines the bacterium as one that primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns and adults with weakened immune systems. Symptoms include muscle aches, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms.

The CDC estimate that on average about 1,600 people in the U.S. become ill from Listerosis every year, and 260 deaths are linked to the illness annually.

Pecorino Cheese purchased in West Palm Beach with the code 290107 and has a sell-by date from Feb. 29 through March 8 should be thrown out. Customers can bring in their receipt to a Whole Foods for a refund.
