Starting school is a major
milestone for our children, and for us. As we watch
them enter this new world, we know they will face challenges, learn an enormous
amount, and hopefully have fun.
Helping our children feel confident and comfortable at school is a goal we
all share.
Tips:
• Let them tell you about school friends, class work, and what
happens during the day.
• Ask them about the rules in school and the reasons for the rules.

One Picture Book, One Community (OPBOC), WLRN Ready To Learn’s
annual literacy outreach, celebrates its 5th Anniversary
this year with the selection of Bob and Otto by Robert O.
Bruel, with illustrations by Nick Bruel. It is the story
of a caterpillar and an earthworm, best friends who do best-friend
things together—eating leaves, digging, and playing.
One day Bob decides to climb a tree just because he feels
he has to. When they meet again, Otto is the same dirt-loving
earthworm, but Bob has grown wings! Friendship overcomes
all in this sweet and funny story, because no matter what
happens, "friends are important."
A special commemorative edition of Bob and Otto has been
printed to celebrate OPBOC’s milestone year. In addition
to all the 1st grade teachers and media libraries in both
Miami-Dade and Broward, every first grade student in 89 M-DCPS
and 30 BCPS elementary schools will also receive their very
own copies of the book bringing OPBOC’s book distribution
to a record-breaking 23,000 books!
One Picture Book, One Community is an outreach project
