Shape-Note Singing

Host Lisa Simeone talks with Tom Tucker of Alexandria, Virginia, about the tradition of Shape-Note singing. Tucker is chairman of "The 2001 Potomac River Sacred Harp Singing Convention" taking place this weekend in Virginia. For more information, contact the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (www.fsgw.org or call 1-202-546-2228). Shape-Note singing in the United States dates back to the 1700s, first taking hold in New England and migrating to the South. It is a style of singing designed for people who are not musically trained.
