Florida Supreme Court Chief Justice George Labarga is creating a new panel of experts to study the state’s legal guardian system.

Labarga says he’s concerned about the growing number of guardianship case.

He wants a working group to study such things as how people are determined legally incapacitated, and to look for less restrictive alternatives.  

The Legislature recently gave the Department of Elder Affairs more power to regulate professional guardians   following an investigative series by the Sarasota Herald Tribune.
