Broward and Miami-Dade counties will move into a Phase 2 of reopening from COVID-19 on Monday, allowing more businesses to reopen, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis said Friday.

Moving to Phase 2 also will open the door for in-person schooling to eventually start in both counties, which have seen their rates of COVID-19 infections fall. “Of course, the most significant aspect of that is it really clears the pathway for in-person instruction to resume,” DeSantis said.

In recent weeks, the governor has downplayed the risk of contracting the virus in many public venues. In addition to his remarks Friday, DeSantis has previously said children should return to school, travelers should book flights, theme parks should open to more people and Floridians should vacation throughout the state.
