Florida Surpasses One Million Coronavirus Cases

Updated Tuesday at 3 p.m.

Florida surpassed one million positive cases of COVID-19 as Florida’s Department of Health confirmed an additional 8,847 cases of COVID-19 Tuesday. Florida has a total of 1,008,166 confirmed positive cases, according to the state's health department.

Tuesday's update also included the announcement of 82 new resident deaths, increasing the statewide number of Floridians who died to 18,679. Factoring in non-resident deaths the number of deaths due to COVID-19 is 18,916.

Disney Increases Number Of Planned Layoffs To 32,000 As COVID-19 Struggles Continue

In another round of announced layoffs, The Walt Disney Company has said 4,000 more workers will be impacted.

On Wednesday, Disney wrote in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing that about 32,000 employees who primarily work in the Disney Parks, Experiences and Products division will be terminated in the first half of the 2021 fiscal year, which began last month.

This is 4,000 more workers than what was announced in September when Disney Parks Chairman Josh D’Amaro said 28,000 employees would be laid off in the division that includes the Florida and California theme parks

Will Florida Raise Weekly Jobless Benefit? Hopes Mixed As Unemployed Face Hardship

Millions of laid-off Americans got no additional help from Washington this Thanksgiving, and it looks like untold thousands who lost their jobs in the coronavirus business shutdown in Florida won't get a break from Tallahassee, either.

While the White House and Congress can't agree on extra unemployment assistance, in Tallahassee the governor and majority GOP lawmakers show no interest in boosting the weekly jobless assistance — which at $275 rates among the lowest in the nation.

"As a voter and as a resident of Florida, my expectations were a little bit higher of my leaders," said struggling restaurant worker Jason Weaver. "I was deeply disappointed being let down."
