WLRN Wins Best Radio News In Regional Green Eyeshade Awards

WLRN is the best radio news station in the southeast region, according to judges of the annual Green Eyeshade awards.  Our journalists’ 2013 work swept the media competition among 11 states capturing nine first place awards including Best of Division - Radio.

WLRN-MiamI Herald News won or placed in all six of the radio division categories – and also secured three first place awards in online categories.  Winners were announced this month in the regional competition organized by the Society for Professional Journalists.

All the Breaking News slots went to WLRN for coverage of the Demise ofDOMA (the Defense of Marriage Act), the death of Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez, and a shared award with StateImpact Florida of the scandal-prompted resignationof Education Commissioner Tony Bennett.

Serious and silly reporting by broadcast veterans Rick Stone and news anchor Kelley Mitchell won Best Newscastwith an informative and fun broadcast about Florida politics and the man who wanted to swap a gator for beer.

Race reporting was the focus of two additional first place entries. Education reporter Sammy Mack’s powerful coverage summarized in After the KKK resulted in the infamous name of a high school being changed after more than 50 years of controversy and took the win for Investigative Reporting

MLK’s March on Washington: Hear From The Folks Who Were There by editors Terence Shepherd and Alicia Zuckerman with producer Wilson Sayre captured first place in Documentaries. The trio interviewed and wove together remembrances of four south Floridians with sound of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King’s “I Have A Dream” speech to create a rich audio snapshot.

Despite South Florida's vulnerability to sea-level rise, there had been little in-depth, comprehensive or objective coverage of the growing threat before last November when WLRN set out to change that part of the local climate. Every WLRN journalist was involved in Elevation Zero: Rising Seas in South Florida.  The special report, hosted by vice-president of news Tom Hudson and produced by Wilson Sayre, took third place in the Documentaries category.  More extensive coverage of Elevation Zero issues won Public Service in Radio Journalism.

A colorful story about a senior sexual health advocate scored third place in Feature Reporting: Miami Herald contributor Ana Veciana-Suarez paired with WLRN’s Kenny Malone for a closer look at the Condom Lady.

Three firsts in the Online Division recognized Tim Padgett’s columns on Latin American and Caribbean issues (Serious Commentary); Arianna Prothero’s coverage of ballet’s glass ceiling (Business Reporting) and the novel treatment by a team of contributors in Remix The News: Dolphin Stadium Coverage took Sports Commentary.

The Green Eyeshade region includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and West Virginia.
