Is the Florida Prison System crumbling?
The new head of Florida’s Department of Corrections, Mark Inch, is worried that the state’s prison system is on the brink of failure. Inch believes there are signs Florida prisons could one day experience a riot as big as the 1980 New Mexico riot, where prison guards killed 33 inmates and held others hostage. Florida’s prison system is the third largest in the nation. Mary Ellen Klas is the Capital Bureau Chief for The Miami Herald and covers government affairs, focusing on investigative and accountability reporting. She joins Sundial to explain the dire state of the Florida Prison System.
Steamboat Exhibition
A new exhibition in Palm Beach County by photographer Sofia Valiente captures life in the Belle Glade community. Valiente spent five years capturing the daily lives of residents. The exhibition is located on a replica 1920s era Steamboat and tries to transport audiences back in time. WLRN’s Palm Beach County reporter Madeline Fox spoke with Valiente about her inspiration for the boat and the exhibition.

Black Power Naps/Siestas Negras
The immersive installation Black Power Naps/Siestas Negras by Afro Latinx artists Navild Acosta and Fannie Sosa looks at what they call the “sleeping gap” — the correlation between sleeping and income inequality and how it affects predominantly people of color. Through artwork like embellished beds, canopies, serene lighting, therapeutic sound vibrations, and guided nap meditations, the artists say the installation is offering reparations. The installation is located at the Miami Dade College's Museum of Art and Design. Acosta and Sosa join Sundial to discuss the installation and how people of color view sleep and relaxation.
