Broward County Sheriff Deputies Video, Airport Employee Investigation & The Origins Of Florida Man

Miami Herald
Miami International airport workers protest for better wages.

Deputies from the Broward County Sheriff’s Department were captured on video slamming a teen’s head into the ground while responding to an after-school call near J.P. Taravella High School two weeks ago. Broward County Sheriff Gregory Tony announced a full investigation earlier this week and WLRN has requested comments from the sheriff and Broward County Sheriff’s Office, but has not received a response. WLRN Broward County reporter Caitie Switalski has been following the story and joined Sundial to discuss the latest developments.

A CBS 4 investigation looked at the working conditions of employees of the company Eulen America, Inc., a contractor at Miami and Fort Lauderdale airports. Reporters found employees facing unsanitary working conditions, lack of access to drinking water on the job and hot temperatures on the airline tarmac. Airport workers say they are retaliated against for speaking about the company. Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, who held a press conference at Miami International Airport earlier on Wednesday to discuss the working conditions of Eulen employees, joined Sundial to talk about the issue.

Much of Florida's national reputation for being weird is thanks to the so-called “Florida Man.” This character's stories flood our social media and the news, but what are the origins of Florida Man? According to Craig Pittman, author of the book "Oh, Florida!" and Tampa Bay Times reporter, they are an unintended consequence of the state's "Sunshine Laws," designed to guarantee that the public has access to the public records of governmental bodies in Florida.
