Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony Officially Files To Run For Election

Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony on Monday officially launched his campaign for next year’s high-stakes election, setting up a showdown with his predecessor who was ousted from the post after the Parkland school shooting.

Tony, a Democrat who is making his first run for elected office, has a formidable opponent among the eight other candidates — ousted Sheriff Scott Israel, who was elected in 2012 and 2016 and wants his old job back.

Tony said his 10 months as sheriff stands in contrast to his predecessor’s tenure, which he said was marred by “mediocre training requirements" and “disregarded internal policies.”
