Simone Kaplan, 13, a seventh grader at St. Bonaventure Catholic in School in Davie, competed for the third time in The Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Simone Kaplan of Davie finished ninth in the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, eliminated to the audible gasps of the gallery as she misspelled tettigoniid, an insect of the family Tettigoniidae.

The 13-year-old Kaplan, who finished 10th in last year’s competition, became a fan favorite for her bee-themed attire and how she would define the words assigned to her.

Fifty spellers began Thursday’s final rounds in Washington, D.C., with 16 reaching the primetime conclusion on ESPN.
