Broward's Parkland Is Rated The Safest City In Florida

Christine DiMattei

Remember the days when you could leave your front door unlocked?

OK – neither can we. But if you want to live in a place where break-ins and other crimes are a rarity, you might want to give Parkland a try.

Jacksonville-based Safe Choice Security says the lush, green Broward County enclave is No. 1 on its list of the safest cities in Florida.

It’s 13 square miles are a blend of equestrian ranches, high-end homes and small rural farms.  True to its name, Parkland has a public park every 1.5 miles or so.

Christine Mita lives in Parkland with her husband and two sons, ages 9 and 3.  She says she saw the safety ranking on a Facebook post.

“Actually, I wasn’t surprised at all," says Mita, 33. "That’s one of the reasons we chose to live in Parkland. And my son bike-rides to school and a lot of his friends do. They play outside and I always feel safe."

Using FBI data from 2012, Safe Choice Security looked at the number of violent and property crimes per 1,000 residents to compile its ranking of the 20 safest cities in Florida. Weston ranked second on the list, while Margate and North Palm Beach also earned high marks for safety.

Coming in at No. 20 is Key Biscayne, the only Miami-Dade city in the ranking.
