Classical Elements Of Life On Earth Inspire Dance NOW! Miami's Latest Work

Earth, air, fire and water.

In many cultures, those are the four elements of life on our planet. The contemporary dance company, Dance NOW! Miami, kicks off its 20th anniversary season Saturday, Dec. 21, with an original work that puts each of those elements in the spotlight.

"Elemental" is the work of choreographer and Dance NOW! Miami co-founder Diego Salterini. It’s comprised of four vignettes — with each piece conceived as its own entity and as a unit.

“In its entirety, it’s a journey from the physical to the metaphysical. From the earthly to the heavenly,” Salterini says.

The upcoming performance will also feature world premiere works from guest choreographers Daniel Lewis and Angela Gallo. Lewis's piece titled "Women II" will feature five young female dancers from Miami’s Conchita Espinosa Academy, where Salterini teaches jazz dance.

"Women II" — a response to the #MeToo movement — is the first new work in 25 years for Lewis, founding dean of dance at New World School of the Arts in Miami. "Those Things . . ." by Gallo, dean of the arts at South Carolina's Coker University, will feature four of Dance NOW! Miami’s male dancers. And DNM's co-founder Hannah Baumgarten will revive her earlier work titled "Visions of Unrest."
