The Legacy Of Former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferré

Former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferré, 84, died late last week, after battling an aggressive spinal cancer the past two years. Ferré was the mayor of Miami from 1973 to 1985 and many considered him to be the father of modern-day Miami. Miami-Dade Commissioner Xavier Suarez, who defeated Ferré in the mayoral race of 1985,  joined Sundial to share some memories of his friendship with Ferré. Also, Commissioner Suarez is running for Miami-Dade County mayor and talked about his election campaign on the program.

Female Suicide Rates Higher Than Expected

A new study from the University of Florida (UF) finds that suicide rates among young women ages 10 to 19 are much higher than previously reported. Dr. Bin Yu is a doctoral student in epidemiology at UF. Dr. Anna Shustack is a clinical social worker and professor of social work at Simmons College and on the Miami-Dade County Board of Directors at National Alliance on Mental Illness. And Patricia Timmerman-Barbosa DeSilva is the executive director of Advocate2Create. They joined Sundial as a panel to discuss the study and suicide prevention.

Miami Beach Cracks Down On Smoking Pot Publically

Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber is supporting a city-wide ordinance that would arrest people for smoking medical and non-medical marijuana in public spaces. Violators could face up to a $500 fine and possible jail time. Samantha Gross, a reporter for the Miami Herald, spoke to Sundial last week about the ordinance and how residents are reacting to this proposal.
