Miami Dade Mayor Backtracks On Closures

Updated Wednesday at 7:30 a.m.

After announcing Monday that he would shut down restaurant dining rooms, gyms and other gathering places because of the coronavirus, Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said Tuesday he has reached a compromise that will allow gyms to remain open.

Under the compromise, Gimenez said people will be required to wear face masks at all times in gyms and that “strenuous” activities will have to be done outside.

Along with announcing the compromise about gyms Tuesday, Gimenez said outdoor dining will be allowed at restaurants. Miami-Dade has by far the largest number of coronavirus cases in the state, with Gimenez saying the positive test rate tops 20 percent. He said that rate will have to drop to about 5 percent before restaurants can resume inside service.
