King tides are the highest tides of the year, and they're a an annual occurrence in Florida. However with the recent water intake from Hurricane Matthew, this year's are expected to be much higher than usual.

If you live in any of Florida's coastal areas or islands, here are some ways to stay safe and dry during the king tides.
- Street water accumulates pollutants from the surrounding environment. If you come in contact with flood water, rinse off immediately with soap.
- Do not allow children to play in flood water.
- Avoid driving through tidal floods. If you do drive through the area, be sure to wash the salt off of your car's undercarriage.
- Refrain from parking your car on low lying areas prone to flooding.
- Stay up-to-date on road closures.
In preparation for the king tides, the city of Miami Beach and the Florida Department of Transportation are continuing their installation of storm water pump stations to assist with the flooding in low lying areas.
