Dogs Get More Days To Work On Their Tan Lines At Haulover

Haulover Beach is known as a place to abandon clothing while having fun in the sun but the nude beach is now extending its welcome to dogs.

The beach is expanding the visiting options for canines from three days a week to seven, an exciting prospect for Pepper and her owner Kelly Newman.

Pepper is a 6-and-a-half-year-old corgi and husky mix. Her coat is perfect for Alaskan winters but not so great for Florida summers, so a few times a week the Newmans make the roughly 30-minute drive up to Haulover Beach from Coconut Grove for a cooling dip.

“She loves to run on the beach and she loves to dig holes,” says Newman of Pepper, “but she loves the water, especially if it’s flat.”

Newman says there are not many convenient and low-cost options for dogs to have a beach day in Miami-Dade County, so the expanded days at Haulover give her a welcome flexibility.

After Labor Day the park will return to its usual Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday schedule, but Newman and Pepper hope it expands beyond that.
