Education Report Ranks Florida 30th

According to an Education Week national report released this morning, Florida ranked 30th in the nation on education quality and was given an overall grade of C-.  That's worse than last year, when the state came in No. 28.

The education newspaper uses three indexes in making up the Quality Counts’ ranking system.

The Chance-for-Success Index combines data from 13 indicators that span a person’s life from cradle to career. Florida ranked 37th with a cumulative grade of a C.

The K-12 Achievement Index examines measures related to reading and math performance, high school graduation rates and results of Advanced Placement tests. The state ranked No. 11 in the nation with a grade of a C.

The School Financial Analysis Index examines budgets of the state, including the equity and spending of each individual state. Florida ranked 38th with a grade of a D+.

The overall decrease of all three categories pulled down Florida’s overall position to below the national average.

The Quality Counts report has gradually changed. Previously the report focused on education policies, which Florida did well by those standards. Last year the report shifted to ranking outcomes, which did not help the state.

Massachusetts ranked No. 1 for the third consecutive year, with an overall B plus grade, and ranked Nevada as the worst with a D.

From once being ranked 5th  in 2011 to now 30th in 2016.
