On this Tuesday, Dec. 11, episode of Sundial:

UPS Truck Shooting

Last week, an armed robbery at a jewelry store in Coral Gables turned into a hostage situation after suspects hijacked a UPS truck. This led the police on a high-speed chase up to Miramar Parkway, where the car was stopped in peak rush hour. The chase ended in a shootout with four dead, including a UPS driver. The FBI and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement are investigating the incident and looking for people who were at the scene and captured video of the shooting. The Miami Herald’s David Ovalle has been reporting on the events and joined Sundial.

The Best-of Sundial Book Club

As the end of the year approaches, the Sundial team devoted a long conversation to some of the books read as part of the Sundial Book Club, an online community that reads all about life in South Florida. Each month the Sundial Book Club reads one book and has an author interview.

In November at the Miami Book Fair, Sundial gathered a panel of former book club authors: T Kira Madden who wrote Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls, a memoir about growing up queer in Boca Raton and losing your father; Alex Segura, author of Miami Midnight, a crime fiction novel that’s part of his Pete Fernandez detective series; and Kristen Arnett, the author of Mostly Dead Things, which follows a taxidermist in central Florida helping her family cope with trauma. They discussed the importance of writing about South Florida and how this region has an abundance of stories.
