It's been more than six months since a bridge collapsed at Florida International University, killing six people. The Miami Herald has been following the story since its collapse. Last month the paper broke a story that showed that engineers who worked on the bridge reported cracks before its collapse. Now the newspaper is reporting that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, OSHA, has fined five companies more than $80,000 for several work safety violations related to the bridge. Last Thursday marked the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Maria making landfall ain Puerto Rico. Back in August, a group of student journalists from the University of Florida's WUFT station traveled to Puerto Rico for a 10-day trip to report on the island's recovery. Journalists Alexis Howard and Claudia Perez Brito examined two aspects of the recovery: tourism and the stray animal population. They joined Sundial to talk about their experience in Puerto Rico and where the greatest challenges remain.
Miami-native Juan Vidal's debut book, “Rap Dad,” examines the intersection between hip-hop and fatherhood. The memoir details his trajectory as a traveling hip-hop artist and a father of four kids, and how he became a successful writer and music critic. Vidal examines the ways in which hip-hop has informed his life and the fathers in hip-hop who are changing the mainstream narrative about fathers of color being absent in their children's’ lives. Vidal joined Sundial to talk about his book and the launch of his book tour Sept. 25 at Books and Books in Coral Gables.
