Fort Lauderdale Votes For New Major And Commissioners

Fort Lauderdale voters headed to the polls today to elect a new mayor and three commissioners.

Vying for mayor are Commissioner Bruce G. Roberts, former commissioner Charlotte Rodstrom and Commissioner Dean Trantalis. Current Mayor Jack Seiler is term-limited.

Also up for election are commissioner seats in District 2, 3 and 4.

District 2 includes Las Olas Isles, Flagler Village, Victoria Park, and other areas of the city. It's got the most candidates running for city commission there, with five to choose from.

District 3 covers part of Sistrunk Boulevard, Rock Island and Melrose Park. Two candidates face off against incumbent, Robert McKinzie.

District 4 voters live in Tarpon River, Marina Mile, the 17th Street Causeway, and in the southern beach areas of the city.

"There's a total lack of effort by the city to try to do anything to improve the quality of lower-income housing" - Tam English

Tam English is a District 4 resident. After he voted at the Plumbers Union Poll Tuesday, he said his main concern is affordable housing.

"I'm born and raised in Fort Lauderdale, my father was born and raised in Fort Lauderdale," he said. "I run the Fort Lauderdale Housing Authority and we deal in low-income housing."

"And there's a total lack of effort by the city to try to do anything to improve the quality of lower-income housing," English said.

Meanwhile, District 1 resident Nancy Zloch was concerned mainly with development in the city.

"We're over building. Our underground, our infrastructure can't handle it," Zloch said. "That, to me, is the most important."

If a candidate does not get 50 percent and 1 of the votes, then the top two candidates in each category will face each other in  a runoff on March 13, 2018.

Polls are open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. There are 120,514 registered voters in the city and they will need to bring a valid picture ID to cast their ballot.
