Today on Sundial: Miami's new mayor, Francis Suarez, joined us in the studio.
Suarez, who was elected in November, made transportation a key issue in his campaign. He said he hopes to use his experience as vice chair of a county-wide transportation planning board to find solutions for traffic congestion and increase access to public transit.
He aims to make Miami one of the most resilient cities in the country, amid the threat of rising seas.
Also on the show: A Miami Herald reporter is headed to the New York Times. Patricia Mazzei will soon start a new job as Miami bureau chief for the prestigious national newspaper.
Mazzei was born and raised in Venezuela, attended the University of Miami and spent more than a decade at the Herald. Her reporting has taken her all over the U.S. and to countries like Cuba, Nicaragua, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Mazzei has followed Florida politics closely and became the Herald's main political writer in 2007. She covered the presidential campaigns of Florida politicians Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio. She led the coverage of Fidel Castro's death and reported firsthand on the aftermath of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
Readers can expect to see her writing in the New York Times as early as next month.
