Miami-Dade and Broward Schools Receive "Less Than Credible" Threat; Classes Continue

Email threats to Miami-Dade and Broward schools were deemed not credible by school officials. Parents were encouraged to send their students to school on Thursday.

Classes in Miami-Dade and Broward are scheduled as normal. That's the message from the districts after receiving a bomb threat Wednesday night similar to the ones recently made in Los Angeles and New York.

Parents are encouraged to still send their kids to school on Thursday.

The threats came in the form of an email Wednesday night.

Both Miami-Dade and Broward schools reached out to local, state and federal authorities. That's when it was determined that the threat was not credible.

Robert Runcie is the superintendent  for Broward public schools. He says it’s not usual for there to be a threat to the entire school district.

“This is the first I have seen where there have been district-wide threats, and not only to a single district, but to multiple districts around the country. And again, federal authorities are involved and it's not credible, but we certainly we need to do our due diligence and figure out the source of where it's coming from,” Runcie said.

Officials believe the threats came from the same account that turned out to be a hoax in Los Angeles.

Miami-Dade schools released a statement Thursday saying classes will still be held but they too are working with authorities to investigate the threat.

Dade schools superintendent Alberto Carvalho said they are working on reassuring parents that it's a normal school day while maintaining an increased law enforcement presence in schools.

Carvalho added that the worst thing the community can do now is give in to hysteria.

“We ought to be aware and prepared, but we ought not be afraid," Carvalho said. "If fear is one of our natural actions or reactions then we have lost.”

On Monday, Key West and Marathon high schools in the Florida Keys received bomb threats by phone.

Classes in Key West were canceled for the day. In Marathon, classes resumed after the school was cleared. No bomb was found at either school.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating the case, which does not appear to be related to the Tuesday school threats in Los Angeles and New York.
