On Wednesday, the Marjory Stoneman Douglass Commission met for the first time since the start of the school year. At the meeting, the commission discussed the implementation of school resource officers, funding for safety measures and surveillance video from the Parkland shooting. WLRN Broward reporter Caitie Switalski joined Sundial and offered an analysis of yesterday’s meeting.

King Tide season is back, but how is Miami Beach preparing? From Sept. 8 to Sept. 13, numerous coastal South Florida cities will deal with increased floods, closed streets and sewage water on sidewalks. Different municipalities are looking for and trying different solutions to alleviate the problems of sunny day flooding. Miami Beach City Manager Jimmy Morales joined Sundial to talk about how the city is engaging with residents in community events and social media to tackle the problem.

A new course from the South Florida Institute of Aging is teaching senior citizens in Broward County how to navigate online and be tech savvy. Senior Planet is a 10-week course that teaches people 55 years and older the basics of the web. In the class, students are learning how to send an email and how to use Facebook, YouTube and Google Maps. A recent grad of the class, Aurora Oliphant;  senior administrator of the program Becky Smither; and the President of the South Florida Institute of Aging Peter Kaldes joined Sundial to talk about how the course is proving the internet and social media are not just for younger generations.

The second annual Frost Music Live series kicks off on Sept.7 at the University of Miami Maurice Gusman Concert Hall at the Coral Gables campus. Students from the Frost School of Music will perform under the instruction of five-time Emmy award-winning composer and conductor Jeff Beal, who has recently released the latest musical soundtrack to famous Netflix show, House of Cards. He is teaming up with the school as part of their signature series for a special performance. The Frost School of Music will have 110 performance in the span of nine months and will start on Friday. Beal and Stephen Guerra, the managing director of the Frost School’s Henry Mancini Institute Orchestra,  joined Sundial to talk about the upcoming concert.
