Orlando Sentinel’s 'Laborland' looks at central Florida’s low-wage workers
The Orlando Sentinel’s new four-part series, Laborland, takes a deep-dive into the low-wage workforce that keeps Florida's theme parks and tourist destinations running.
The series examines the challenges facing tourism workers in terms of wages, housing and transportation in Central Florida. Chabeli Herrera, the lead reporter of this project and business reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, spoke to Sundial about the project and the workers across the hospitality industry she featured. Sundial reached out to Walt Disney World, one of the institutions featured in the series and they replied redirecting to a page with their community building guidelines.
Michael Tilson Thomas receives a prestigious award
American composer and pianist Michael Tilson Thomas will be honored on Sunday with the Kennedy Center Honor for Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the highest achievements in the arts.
"We've all been very involved with how the arts really get into people's lives, how they become a partnership in people's lives," he said on Sundial.
Tilson Thomas, also co-founder and artistic director for the New World Symphony, spoke to Sundial producer Chris Remington about his work in the classical music world and the next steps in his career. The Kennedy Center Honor for Lifetime Achievement Award ceremony will be broadcast at 8 p.m. on CBS. The New World Symphony will also have a free viewing at the Soundscape park on Miami Beach.
