Confessed-shooter Nikolas Cruz, at a prior hearing. At Friday's hearing, the judge scheduled the next steps in his case.

Nikolas Cruz, the confessed-shooter in the Parkland school massacre, had a short hearing on Friday.

Cruz was again very silent, with his head down, as he has been at all of his previous court appearances. His team of public defenders announced he is waiving his right to a speedy trial.

The judge presiding over his criminal case, Elizabeth Scherer, had been hoping she could set  dates for future depositions and tentatively for the start of Cruz’s trial.

Cruz’s legal team hasn’t filed a demand for discovery yet, or the formal request for the state to give their side copies of all evidence it plans to use. The file is needed to set a trial date.

Scherer gave Cruz’s public defenders until May 4 to file what they need, saying, “I don’t want this case treading water.”

Cruz’s next hearing is at the end of May.

Scherer said she hopes to set a tentative trial date by the end of June.
