03/17/14 - Today on Topical Currents we visit noted historian Dr. Paul George of History Miami. For many years, Paul George co-hosted our popular “South Florida History Quiz,” but today, we chat with him about the rich stories of the beginnings of Broward County, the City of Miami, and its adjunct Coconut Grove. The Grove pre-dates the City of Miami, with early inhabitants hailing from the Bahamas . . . The City of Miami was created after Flagler's railroad headed down the road. Many of the signees of the original city charter were AfricanAmericans. Broward county is named after renegade Governor NapoleonBonaparteBroward . . . Fort Lauderdale after a martyr of the 2ndSeminole war. That's Topical Currents Monday at 1pm.
