SunPass Problems, A Marjory Stoneman Douglas Dad & Disparities In Miami-Dade Arrests

Jul 30, 2018

State Rep. Kionne McGhee wants Florida to stop collecting money from tolls while it responds to problems with the SunPass system. The Democrat says Gov. Rick Scott should create an independent auditing committee to investigate the state's handling of unprocessed toll payments and other customer service complaints.

McGhee also supports the expansion of the Metrorail in south Miami-Dade County. The Miami-Dade transportation board will consider in August whether to extend the train line or instead upgrade the South Dade busway.

He joined Sundial to discuss why he supports rail and how Florida can best respond to SunPass problems.

Jeff Kasky, the father of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student and activist Cameron Kasky, started a new super PAC that seeks stronger gun control policies, including a ban on assault weapons. Families vs. Assault Rifles is already playing a role in this year's midterm elections.

Kasky told Sundial host Luis Hernandez about the PAC's fundraising and goals. He also talked about his son, who continues a March for Our Lives tour across the country.

And University of Miami professor Nick Peterson spoke with Sundial about a new report from the American Civil Liberties Union and the University of Miami that shows African Americans and black Hispanics in Miami-Dade County are significantly more likely to be arrested than their caucasian and white Hispanic counterparts. The report examines racial and ethnic disparities throughout the Miami-Dade criminal justice system from 2010 to 2015.
