The Suncoast Chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences recognized WLRN-TV with a Suncoast Regional Emmy Award for "Inside the Mind of a Comic Creator."
The announcement came during the 42nd Annual Suncoast Emmy Awards Ceremony on Saturday, December 1st, in Orlando, FL.
"Inside the Mind of a Comic Creator," submitted in the category of Interstitials, was produced by WLRN’s Mia Laurenzo and edited by Madeleine Edwina Lantigua. This short film features local Cuban born artist, Carlos Castellanos who is a freelance illustrator and co-creator of the comic strip Baldo.
Seen in over 230 newspapers, Baldo is the first nationally syndicated strip to feature a Latino family. Carlos was once a student at Miami Dade College taking medical classes before a teacher noticed him drawing rather than taking notes and advised him to go into illustration. He lives in Palm Beach where his alter ego, Baldo, can be seen in the Palm Beach Post.
The Suncoast Regional Emmy Awards recognize excellence in television and the regions' leadership for their artistic, educational and technical achievements within the television industry.
