WLRN Public Media Statement on White House COVID-19 Briefings

With the escalation of the coronavirus pandemic, WLRN Public Media believes it is in the best interest of our audience to broadcast the White House briefings live. We believe it is important that the American people hear, in real-time, how their democratically-elected president and his team are managing this unprecedented crisis.

These briefings can deliver important public health information and details regarding the federal government’s response. We recognize these events also include political rhetoric and statements not supported by facts.

Unfortunately, National Public Radio (NPR) has decided to suspend its live anchored coverage. Until further notice, NPR will be providing raw, un-hosted coverage of the White House briefings.

NPR’s decision means important real-time fact-checking and context is missing from the briefings. WLRN believes this is a disservice to NPR member stations and our audiences. WLRN has reached out to NPR to ask if it is going to restore its anchored coverage to provide the real-time vital analysis and objective facts that the public media audience has come to expect and deserve.
