Prohibition and the South Florida Connection on WLRN-TV

Prohibition and the South Florida Connection (8 pm)                                                                               An original production by WLRN, South Florida's Storyteller.

For many, the word Prohibition conjures up scenes of gang wars in New York, New Jersey and Chicago along with some of the decade’s most infamous characters, Bugs Moran, Meyer Lansky and Al Capone. Yet few realize the prominent role South Florida, and its Caribbean neighbors played in the transportation of illegal booze into the U.S. during this infamous era. Depicting the prohibition era experience from Palm Beach to Key West is the engaging documentary, “Prohibition and the South Florida Connection.”

Deep City: The Birth of the Miami Sound (9 pm)

Deep City: The Birth of the Miami Sound is a WLRN original production that explores the early days of soul music in Florida, the era’s pioneers and their lasting contributions to the broader American musical landscape.

During the mid-1960s two musical geniuses Willie Clarke and Johnny Pearsall created the first black-owned record label in Florida called Deep City Records. Both from the streets of Miami, Clarke and Pearsall honed their business and musical skills learned in college and then from the back room of Johnny’s Record Store located in Overtown, they went on to change the sound of soul music in Miami and eventually the country.
