Judge Backs Suspending Florida Some Recount Deadlines

Nov 15, 2018

A Leon County circuit judge Tuesday ordered the suspension of recount deadlines in the races for governor, agriculture commissioner and a state House seat to give Palm Beach County elections officials time to finish recounting ballots.

UPDATE: Judge Mark Walker has ruled Florida's system for curing issues with mail-in ballots is being applied unconstitutionally. Walker is giving voters that have problems with their mail-in ballots until 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, to correct the issue.

FDLE Chief ‘Troubled’ By Bondi Assertions

Nov 15, 2018

The commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement said he is “deeply troubled” that Attorney General Pam Bondi thought he would not pursue investigations into potential criminal activity related to last week’s elections.

Rick Scott is Florida's Republican governor, not a senator-elect.

Yet there he was at Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's left shoulder Wednesday when the Kentucky Republican welcomed GOP senators who will take their seats in January when the new Congress is sworn in.

The battle over Florida's three statewide recounts rages on in the courts. Why? You have to go back to the contested 2000 presidential election.

Facing continuous criticism over its vote-counting process, the Broward County Elections office said Wednesday it has finished sorting the first pages of election ballots and is more than halfway done with the recount mandated by the Florida Secretary of State in three races.

“We will probably transition sometime this afternoon or this evening to the Election Day recount,” said Joseph D'Alessandro, the director of election planning and development for Broward County.

As confusion continues over the outcome of multiple Florida elections, a hand recount has been ordered in that state's narrow Senate race between Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson and Republican Gov. Rick Scott. Meanwhile, in the gubernatorial contest, Republican Ron DeSantis appears headed to victory over Democrat Andrew Gillum after a machine recount did not significantly narrow the margin in that race.

Florida’s military and overseas citizens vote-by-mail ballots are being accepted at Supervisors of Elections Offices across the state through Friday, but it’s unlikely they’ll change the outcome of any contested races currently under recount.

Rick Scott's campaign for Senate has filed another lawsuit. This time, the target is Hillsborough County Elections Supervisor Craig Latimer.

The suit accuses Latimer's office of breaking Florida law by not allowing observers into the room where the county's ballots are being recounted.

Democratic incumbent U.S. Senator Bill Nelson’s campaign is asking a federal court to give supervisors of elections more time to recount ballots as a Thursday deadline approaches to complete the recounts in Florida’s Senate, gubernatorial and agriculture commissioner races.

Palm Beach County’s race to recount votes is heating up — literally.

The county’s decade-old ballot-counting machines overheated and gave incorrect totals, forcing the county to restart its recount of about 175,000 early votes., supervisor of Elections Susan Bucher said Tuesday night.

The department has flown in mechanics to repair the machines.

Over 10,000 so-called "over-under" ballots have been identified by the Miami-Dade Elections Department in the course of a recount for three state races ordered by the state of Florida, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez said on Tuesday.

"Over-under" ballots are those where someone either filled in two or more blanks, or left the question blank entirely. If a manual recount is ordered by the state after the machine recount that is currently under way, those ballots will be reviewed and possibly tabulated.
