Voters in Broward County decided Tuesday to create a dedicated trust fund for affordable housing programs.

The trust fund creates a localized version of the state's affordable housing fund, the Sadowski Fund. But unlike the Sadowski fund, money in Broward's fund must be used exclusively on housing projects and programs. 

Future county commissions can choose how much money to contribute each year, but will not be forced to contribute a specific amount.

Broward County voters have a lot to decide this election. 

Every voter in the county will get 12 ballot questions; there are up to nine amendment questions, depending on the city. 

One of those amendments: a trust fund to make the cost of housing in Broward more affordable. We explain what's at stake.

Broward County is the most cost-burdened area in the country, according to a Harvard study. Residents are paying more than 30 percent of their monthly income on rent alone.

The majority of households in Broward County are cost-burdened. That means they’re paying more than 30 percent - in some cases more than 50 percent - of their monthly income on rent alone.  

And buying a house in Broward is more expensive than in other parts of South Florida. The median home price is $340,000, while the median income for a family of four is $64,100.

House says she complained for more than a year to the management at the Stonybrook Apartments that her last apartment had a mold problem.

“They knew what was going on and yet they still did nothing,” she says. “I complain and complain and they saw me as like a nuisance.”
