Hollywood wants more people to recycle – and to make sure they do it the right way.

Starting April 1, the city is switching up its incentives program to encourage residents to recycle.

With a new contract, the city is moving away from a third party program called Recycling Perks and joining a program with its service provider, Waste Pro. It's called Waste Pro Rewards.

Broward County’s hopes of building a new emergency communications tower in the county-owned West Lake Park in Hollywood suffered another setback Wednesday night when Tamarac commissioners deferred a vote on a deal necessary to begin construction of the tower.

A dispute between the city of Hollywood and Broward County over where to put a 911 radio tower was supposed to be settled once and for all last month. That's when a consultant's report was released, choosing the county's preferred location of West Lake Park over the city of Hollywood's favored option,  the rooftop of a hotel called The Circ.

Broward County’s own rules don’t allow it to build a communications tower on property it owns in West Lake Park, the site it successfully pushed for over the objections of Hollywood officials and residents.

But the county can get around its own charter regulations — if it gives the land to someone else first.

Enter Tamarac, a city about 20 miles from the park site, which plans to do a deal with the county to keep the desperately needed new radio system moving forward for police, firefighters and other emergency responders.

'National Night Out' is an annual campaign that encourages people to get to know their neighbors, police and city officials - and organize against crime.

In Hollywood, that looked like 13 block parties on the same night, all hosted by civic associations.

"Rain or shine it doesn't matter - we need more community involvement," Pam Burgio said.

A bit more time may be soon be added on to your Virgin train trip—but for a select number of cities, access will now be granted to the fastest train in the south.

In a recent filing, Virgin officials said they plan to announce up to three new stations before the end of the year in an effort to boost ridership. While the company is so far declining to name its new city stops, Hollywood may well be on the list.

The dispute between Broward County and City of Hollywood officials over where to put a new 911 radio tower is one step closer to solution.

County commissioners voted Tuesday to approve an agreement with Hollywood with provisions for choosing an independent expert to pick the site for the new tower as early as the end of this month .

City of Hollywood commissioners met again Wednesday to talk about where to put a new 911 radio tower.

Commissioners worked out key terms they want included in an agreement with Broward County in order to choose a location for the tower, after nine months of back-and-forth.

It's an incremental step forward: Hollywood staff can now draft an actual agreement, which commissioners will vote on next week. Broward's county commission will also have to vote on the agreement.

After meeting on Thursday, Broward County and Hollywood commissioners still disagree over where to put a new 911 communications tower.

The meeting between both sets of lawmakers was the latest highlight of a nine-month battle between the county and city over the location of the 911 tower. The Broward commission has wanted the tower placed in the county-owned West Lake Park but has needed the city’s approval to build the tower there.

Broward County commissioners will vote  Tuesday on whether to allow a new 911 radio tower to be built in a Hollywood park.

The tower under debate is part of a highly-anticipated upgrade to the county's regional 911 public safety radio system, which will see a total of seven new towers added. It comes after problems with communication during the shootings at  Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in 2017  and again at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in 2018.
