Broward County has the fastest-growing population of people over 85 in the country. One of the growing problems they face is social isolation, which can lead to depression, loneliness and safety issues for those living alone.

Middle school can be a difficult time in life.

Nearly a year ago the counseling program 'School Is Cool' was launched in 10 middle schools across Broward County with the help of the Community Foundation of Broward. The program targets students who have issues with attendance, behavior or poor grades and works with them to boost involvement at school.

Now the program is almost ready to expand to even more schools.

Over the past two years, The Community Foundation of Broward has awarded 16 grants totaling $800,000 to local nonprofits to bring relief to residents who are struggling financially.

Now the foundation is accepting a new round of applications to fund programs that promote economic independence.

Joe Trembly knows homelessness firsthand. When he moved to South Florida in the 80s, he found himself out of a job and living on the streets.

He's since spent decades working with Fort Lauderdale’s large LGBT community and with people affected by homelessness at the local sober living facility, Keystone Halls.

A new short film chronicles a campaign in the 1990s to protect Broward County’s LGBTQ community from discrimination.

The film, 'Our Broward Story,' includes longtime activists like Dean Trantalis, now the mayor of Fort Lauderdale. In the film, Trantalis recalls nightclub raids and hateful comments from the late 1980s and early 90s, when the city wasn’t as LGBTQ friendly as it is now.

“There was still a lot of fear about repression in our community, so we were there, but we tried to stay under the radar,” Trantalis said.

Broward County has the most same-sex couples of anywhere in Florida, and it’s rated as a top 20 LGBTQ vacation destination.

The Community Foundation of Broward launched a middle school initiative five years ago called ‘School Is Cool.’ It was a pilot program that targeted students who were not involved with clubs and friends or whose  grades had started to slip. Until now, the foundation was only able to use the program with middle schoolers during the summer and after school.

But now the foundation has made the largest grant in its history, $3 million, to the Broward County School District to address isolation issues before students get to high school.
