Developers want to build what would be the biggest shopping center in the Florida Keys — 335,000 square feet — on the site of a former Rockland Key junkyard.

Walmart has signed a letter of intent to be the anchor tenant, and the store would probably employ about 200 people. The shopping center as a whole would employ 600.

Which leads to this question: Where are those workers earning retail wages supposed to live in the expensive Florida Keys?

A new development project designed to build retail and hotel space in downtown Miami is poised to break ground in the coming months.

The developers of Miami Worldcenter have promised the project will bring jobs to the nearby community of Overtown.

But some critics say a high development of the area will drive those residents away.

Green City

A new development project, Green City, just released its plans to build a 860 acre eco-friendly village in west Miami-Dade County.

The ambitious project is slated to be built over the next two decades and calls for the inclusion of, among other things, 1.36 million square feet of retail, 11,401 new homes (a portion of which will be set aside for affordable housing), a sports village, and a hydroponics facility.

The Miami-Dade County Commission unanimously passed a resolution Tuesday in favor of creating the Miami Worldcenter Community Development District. This is a special taxing district that would be used to raise funds for infrastructure for the development project.

Activists and community organizers turned out in force at the meeting, calling for greater labor rights and protections for Overtown residents.

Everglades Bike Path: Yea Or Nay?

The window for public comment on the latest Everglades tourism project is closing soon. The controversial River of Grass Greenway (ROGG) would be a 75-mile bike path running along U.S. 41 from Naples to Miami.

The Dream Defenders, a local social justice group, says it will protest against Miami Worldcenter until certain demands are met that benefit the struggling Overtown community.

Overtown borders the $2 billion Worldcenter development and critics say the project will shut out residents of that neighborhood.

Until their demands are met, the Dream Defenders protesters say they will create civil unrest and demonstrate at County Hall.

The Miami Worldcenter project hosted a job fair at the Historic St. Agnes Episcopal Church in Overtown that drew hundreds of people from across Miami-Dade Tuesday — including many Overtown residents.

The project is expected to create 18,000 direct jobs.

And while some have been critical about the Worldcenter’s impact in Overtown, Miami Commissioner Keon Hardemon said Tuesday’s turnout is evidence that people in the community see the project as something positive.

The land along Key West's western shore was one of the first areas of the island to be developed, when the U.S. Navy established a base there in the 1820s. It eventually became known as Truman Annex, after the president who liked to vacation in Key West. Now it's called the Truman Waterfront, and it's set to become a new park for the city.

Key West Mayor Craig Cates says it's always been an important part of the city.

Levitt Pavilion Awaits Fort Lauderdale's Approval

The City of Fort Lauderdale may get a new outdoor concert venue along its riverfront. Levitt Pavilions, a national nonprofit organization, recently selected the city to receive seed funding and technical support to develop a public performing arts space in Esplanade Park.

The Miami-Dade County Commission voted Tuesday to approve a land deal for the development of what would be the nation's largest mall.

The proposed mega-mall, American Dream Miami, would cost approximately $4 billion to build and would occupy 200 acres of west Miami-Dade. The park would contain aquatic attractions such as an indoor ski slope, a water park and a submarine ride.

The land deal allows Triple Five -- the mall's developer -- to purchase the 82 acres of Miami-Dade property owned by the state.

Miami’s Downtown Development Authority (DDA) held its first ever “State of Downtown” event Friday evening to showcase the growth of Miami’s urban core. Miami Commissioner and DDA Chairman Marc Sarnoff says downtown is on the upswing.

Farmers want to sell their land to developers because business is bad.
