The newest member of the powerful state board that regulates education in Florida is singularly focused on ousting the superintendent of the state's second-largest school district.

The State Board of Education is expected Wednesday to approve a report that details a shortage of certified science, English and math teachers in Florida’s public schools.

The annual report points to issues such as a scarcity of certified teachers in subject areas such as general science, physics and chemistry when compared to fields such as elementary education. Also, it details factors such as teacher-education programs turning out relatively few science and math teachers.

The father of a Parkland shooting victim who has been a high-profile conservative advocate for school safety has been tapped for the board that governs all K-12 schools and community colleges in Florida.

Outgoing Republican Gov. Rick Scott announced his pick of Andrew Pollack — whose daughter, Meadow, died at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School last February — for a seat on the state Board of Education. Pollack campaigned for Scott during his successful bid for U.S. Senate.

Education Report Ranks Florida 30th

  According to an Education Week national report released this morning, Florida ranked 30th in the nation on education quality and was given an overall grade of C-.  That's worse than last year, when the state came in No. 28.

The education newspaper uses three indexes in making up the Quality Counts’ ranking system.

The Chance-for-Success Index combines data from 13 indicators that span a person’s life from cradle to career. Florida ranked 37th with a cumulative grade of a C.
