The Miami-Dade County Police Department has created a new unit tasked with preventing people with serious mental illnesses from reaching a crisis point or potentially shooting someone with firearms, WLRN has learned.

Florida lawmakers are pressing pause on a bill that would pave the way for an elected sheriff in Miami-Dade County. The plan is forcing legislators to choose between empowering voters or stepping on the toes of local governments.

Representatives from law enforcement agencies across Miami-Dade County pledged Monday night to test out a model for reducing gun violence by focusing on providing services to a small number of perpetrators.

Animal rights activists who object to the treatment of some of the animals kept at the Miami Seaquarium are getting a little more room to air their concerns. The American Civil Liberties Union of Florida has settled a lawsuit with Miami-Dade police over how much space protesters can occupy outside the venue.

Representatives from a host of local, state and federal law enforcement law enforcement agencies gathered in the sanctuary of Antioch Baptist Church in Miami Gardens Tuesday night for the first of a series of community meetings about the aftermath of police shootings in Miami-Dade County.

The Miami-Dade State Attorney’s office, the U.S. Department of Justice, Florida Department of Law Enforcement and several police departments took part in the effort to help explain the process of investigating and eventually prosecuting those cases.

Nine people were shot and wounded at West Little River Park while playing basketball Monday afternoon.

The shooter allegedly opened fire from the passenger seat of a Nissan Maxima, Miami-Dade County police said.

A 16-year-old boy was shot in the head and is in critical but stable condition. Police say the other eight victims were shot in their extremities and are expected to fully recover.
