Hip-hop, Islamic culture and the community of Opa-locka intersected on Saturday during a block party held at the Opa-locka Arts and Recreation Center.

The event, Hip Hoppa Locka, was a culmination of a two-week residency program by Miami Dade College's Live Arts in which Muslim artists taught students from the Arts Academy of Excellence Charter School hip-hop-inspired styles of art, dance and music.

Opa-locka Commissioner Facing Corruption Charges Killed in Car Crash

On Wednesday morning, Opa-locka city commissioner Terence Pinder was supposed to surrender to face allegations that he illegally accepted $7,020 from a solid-waste contractor in exchange for political favors.

On Tuesday, Pinder crashed the SUV he was driving into a tree in a large open field at a very high speed and ended his life.

In the city of Opa-locka, a colorful park stands where liquor bottles and trash once collected in an empty lot.

New and chic affordable housing is popping up. Bright murals decorate buildings downtown.

Three years into a citywide arts transformation, Opa-locka is challenging how outsiders perceive the north Miami-Dade enclave, once better known for its prolific drug trade and gun violence.

Much of this transformation involves collaborations with artists. Artists and their ideas infused are in affordable housing development, urban planning and landscaping.

Magnolia North is the new name for an area in Opa-locka, which was formerly dubbed The Triangle and known for drugs and crime. Now city leaders hope Magnolia North will be known for galleries and studios and become the next vibrant arts district in South Florida.

When you think of architecture in South Florida, the first styles which come to mind might be Spanish Revival or Art Deco. Moorish Revival probably doesn't top that list -- unless you're familiar with Opa-locka.

Plans For New Coconut Grove Waterfront Are In

Grove Bay Investment Group has submitted a proposal for what may become "The Harbour" in historic Coconut Grove.

The city manager, city commission and Miami voters still have to approve plans for the area, which include a tree park, retail space and a monument or exhibit of South Florida aviation history.
