Nine candidates vying to be elected the next Broward County Sheriff gathered on Zoom Monday night to face off on some of the issues affecting voters including: police brutality, reallocating law enforcement funding, and the county's 9-1-1 communications system.

It was also a tense evening full of personal attacks as former Sheriff Scott Israel sparred with his rival, incumbent Sheriff Gregory Tony.

TALLAHASSEE — Arguing that proceedings resulting in his ouster “were little more than a sham,” former Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel wants a federal judge to reject a request by Senate President Bill Galvano and Gov. Ron DeSantis to toss out a lawsuit challenging Israel’s removal from office.

Senate President Bill Galvano and Gov. Ron DeSantis are asking a federal judge to reject a lawsuit filed by former Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, who contends his constitutional rights were violated when he was removed from office last year.

Former Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, ousted following the Parkland high school massacre, is suing over his removal from office.


Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony on Monday officially launched his campaign for next year’s high-stakes election, setting up a showdown with his predecessor who was ousted from the post after the Parkland school shooting.

Tony, a Democrat who is making his first run for elected office, has a formidable opponent among the eight other candidates — ousted Sheriff Scott Israel, who was elected in 2012 and 2016 and wants his old job back.

Even as Scott Israel denounced the process that ended Wednesday with confirmation of his ouster as Broward sheriff, he reiterated his intention to return to the job.

“I want to let the people of Broward County know I came here to fight, make good on my promises to finish the job that was entrusted to me,” Israel said. “I am running for election in 2020, and the voters in Broward County, they understand the injustice.

The Florida Senate is poised to formally remove Scott Israel as sheriff of Broward County Wednesday and, in a largely party-line vote, uphold his suspension from office by Gov. Ron DeSantis.

While the vote is expected to be seen as a political victory for the governor and long-sought validation for the families of the victims of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting who blame Israel’s failed leadership for the deaths of 17 students and faculty in 2018, it won’t end the debate.

In a precursor to next week’s special Senate session to decide if Scott Israel should get his job back as Broward County sheriff, parents of the students murdered in the Parkland school shooting on Monday urged and warned state senators not to do it.

A special master appointed by the Florida Senate is recommending reinstatement for Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel. Gov. Ron DeSantis suspended the sheriff in January, citing the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in which 17 people died.
